I would plot the coordinates for both of the functions given. When you look at the graphs, I think you can tell that g(x) is a reflection over the y axis, left 2 units and up 2 units. From there you can use the transformation mapping rules to go from f(x) = x2 +1 to g(x) = (-x - 2)2 + 2.
- reflection over the y axis (x, y) --> (-x,y)
- left 2 units (x, y) --> (x-2, y)
- up 2 units (x, y) --> (x, y + 2)
- All together: (x, y) --> (-x-2,y+2)
note all of the above were done to f(x) to get to the function g(x)
Does this make sense to you (I hope)?
