Set up a system of equations:
x = 2y - 8
x + y = 100
Substitute x in terms of y from the first equation into the second equation and solve for y:
x + y = 100
(2y - 8) + y = 100
3y - 8 = 100
3y = 108
y = 108 / 3 = 36
Plug in the value for y into the first equation to solve for x:
x = 2y - 8 = 2(36) - 8 = 64
The number = 64 and the other number = 36
