asked 09/05/20Writing Equations of Linear Functions
Writing equations of linear functions, please help!
The chart below is asking what the slope, y intercept, and equations are.
In the first chart it has x on the left and underneath are the numbers: 4,5,6,7 and 8
And on the right is y with the numbers 16,17,18,19 and 20
How would I identify the slope, y intercept, and equation for this problem?
1 Expert Answer
Remember that slope = m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1) and that a linear equation has the form y=mx+b.
For example the slope between (4,16) and (5,17) is 1.
Then notice that the difference between successive point pairs given is also 1.
This tells you that the equation you need has slope m=1.
The intercept b can be determined from the first point: 16=4+b => b = 12
Your equation is y = x + 12.
