First we must understand what consecutive numbers are. Consecutive numbers are numbers one after another in order. For example, 2, 3, and 4 and consecutive numbers. Using this definition we can reach
x + (x+1) + (x+2) = 963 because x is the first number, (x+1) would be the next number as 3 is 1 more than 2 and (x+2) is the third number as in our example 4 is 2 more than 2. Next we combine like terms, since there are 3 x's we add those and 2+1=3 as with the constants. We now reach. 3x+3=963. To isolate x, the opposite of addition is subtraction therefore we must subtract the constant on both sides to reach 3x=960. To solve for x, the opposite of mulitplying a number is dividing thus we divide 960 by 3 and get that x=320. However we are not finished. As stated previously, x is the first number, x+1 is the second consecutive number, and the third consecutive number would be x+2. Substituting our value of x, we would reach that the three consecutive numbers are 320, 321, and 322. You can verify your answer by substituting x into the original equation we wrote above. x + (x+1) + (x+2) = 963. After substitution we get 320 + (320+1) + (320+2) = 963. First completing parenthesis we get 320 + 321 + 322 = 963. Adding the left side of the equation we reach 963 = 963 which is a valid solution therefore we reached the correct answer.
