Since the square root of a number is equal to the square root of its factors, you can say the square root of 48 is equal to the square root of 16 times 3.  You can then calculate the square root of 16 as 4, and leave the remaining 3 under the radical.  Since we cannot determine the square root of b, the final answer is 4 times the square root of 3b.
