Julio and Jake start their reading assignments the same day. Jake is reading a 168−page-book at a rate of 24 pages per day. Julios book is 180 pages long and his reading rate is 1 1/4 times Jake rate.

we know that jake reads his book at a rate of 24 pages per day (this would be the slope if you were to graph this line). jake's book also has 168 pages, so he'll finish his book when

24 pages/day x t days = 168 pages (jake)

julio's is found similarly

1.25 x (24 pages/day ) x t days = 180 pages (julio

we want to know who has more pages left to read after 5 days, so here t = 5 days. plug that in and get your answer

The number of pages Julio reads per day = 1.25 * 24 = 30 pages per day.

After five days, Jake will have 168 - 24*5 = 48 pages left to read.

After five days, Julio will have 180 - 30*5 = 30 pages left to read.
