I need help solving 6x-16=4x

+16= 4x+16

6x = 4x+16

-4x -4x

2x = 16

x=8

So we want to solve for x, and we do that by getting all the x terms on one side of the equal sign and all the constants on the other side. *anything you do to one side of the equation must be done to the other side so you don't change the value of the equation*

6x-16 = 4x

the fastest way to separate variables and constants in this case is to subtract 6x from each side of the equation which gives us

-16 = -2x

Now that we have all of our x terms combined on the one side, we must divide both sides by the coefficient of the x term (-2)

-16/-2 = -2x/-2 * a negative times a negative or divided by a negative becomes positive!

8 = x
