PASSIONATE about React Web Development
First of all, there are specific tags or html elements you are going to want to utilize for SEO (search engine optimization), and just to display properly in a SERP (search engine rankings page) in general. You are going to need the full html shell. In the <head> section of the full html shell, the first thing you need to do is add a <title>This is the Title That Gets Displayed in SERP</title> section. The contents of the <title> tag will be the name of your site that you want Google to display in the search results.
The next tag you want to utilize for SEO is the description tag, which also goes in the <head> section, and it looks like this:
<meta name=”description” content=”This is the description of what my website is all about.”>
As the name implies this is the section that will describe your website underneath the title displayed in the search results.
Keywords are important as well. You want to use words in your title tag and your description tag, that people will be searching for in Google, that are related to your site. This is the primary way they find your site through a search for specific a specific word or phrase. You also want to spread these keywords throughout your document, because when Google crawls the site it will, in general, rank you based on the distribution of these keywords. You really want to focus on putting these keywords into your header tags as well (<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5>).
The next thing you want to think about is does your site have any images? We can provide text that Google can crawl and use to help your site and your images rank in the search results. Here is an example:
<img src="image.png" alt="here is some text about my image that google can read and use to rank my image">. Often this alt description is ignored and SEO is negatively impacted.
Links on your site that reach external sources can also help improve SEO. If you reference some exterior source in your website, then that is probably a good place to put the link. If you add anchor text to the link as well, this can also boost SEO.
Those are some of the basics to get you off and running, but I would definitely look into ARIA tags as well. These are accessibility tags used to help people with special needs understand a website. Google looks favorably upon sites that are accessible. The ARIA tags also give you a chance to add even more text and keywords to your website that Google can crawl and use to help your site rank higher.
The last thing I want to mention isn't asked in your question, but it is the most important factor when it comes to SEO. It is not a tag, a section, links, or keywords that ultimately have the biggest impact on SEO. These are important and should be used in the way that I have described here, but they are secondary to CONTENT.
Yep! That's right! The real secret to SEO is to create AMAZING content that people want to interact with. If a website is dull or uninteresting, when someone clicks on it's link in Google, they pretty much see the website is not what they wanted and, after a few seconds, they hit the back button. This is called a bounce and it is really bad for SEO. Google can tell how much time people are spending on your website, and if they don't stick around then Google knows it needs to de-rank your site as it is not relevant to what people are searching for.
Alrighty, that's it for this basic intro to SEO. I hope this was helpful! If you want to learn more and/or get some in-depth help with SEO, feel free to message me and we can set up a tutoring session. I am always happy to take on new students that have passion and desire for learning.
