x + y = 5 and xy = -50
y = 5-x ---> x(5-x) = -50
5x - x^2 = -50
0 = x^2 - 5x - 50
0 = ( x - 10 )(x + 5 )
x-10 = 0 ---> x = 10
x+5 = 0 --> x = -5
10 and -5
