Let "a" be the number of adult tickets and let "c" be the number of child tickets. Then since twice as many child tickets were sold, then we can say 2a = c (if you double the number of adult tickets you will get the number of child tickets)
We can also say that a + c = 480
So, since "2a" is the same as "c", we can write the last equation as a + (2a) = 480 then we solve:
a + (2a) = 480
3a = 480
a = 160
Meaning 160 adult tickets were sold.

Let X = child tickets
Let Y = adult tickets
"Twice as many child tickets are sold":
Y = 2X
"...a total of 480 tickets were sold?":
X + Y = 480
Substitute in for Y and solve for X:
X + 2X = 480
3X = 480
X = 160
Therefore, 160 adult tickets were sold and 320 child tickets were sold. .

Child tickets (c) =2*adult tickets (a); That is, c=2a; Now, Total tickets=480; adult tickets +child tickets=480; a+(c)=480; a+(2a)=480; 3a=480; a=480/3; a=160. ps- the semicolon represents end of the line- for some reason, the text formatting is not being preserved...04/24/20
