Let x = the number of students in the club
 
We know that 40% of x is 16, so 
 
0.4x = 16
 
x = 16 / 0.4 = 40 students in the club.  
 
To check this, take 40% of 40 (this means multiply 0.4 times 40) to verify that there are 16 girls in the club.
