A rectangular room is 4 feet longer than it is wide. If the perimeter of the room is 38 feet, what is the length of the room?

38 = 2L + 2W

and L = 4 + W

plug in L

 

38 = 2(4+W) + 2W

38 = 8 + 2W + 2W

38 = 4W + 8

30 = 4W

W = 30/4

or W = 15/2

 

38 = 2L + 2(15/2)

38 = 2L + 15

23 = 2L

L = 23/2
