Let "the number" be equal to x. Therefore, using this logic, we can say "three times of a number" must be 3x.
Difference means subtraction, so 3x - x would be on the left side of the equation. "Is" means "=", so...
3x - x = 9 ⇒ 2x = 9 ⇒ x = 4.5
Therefore, "The number", or x, is 4.5. In addition, "Three times of a number", or 3x, is 13.5
