a rectangular field is twice as long as it is wide. If 5 feet are taken from the width, and 4 feet taken from the length, the resultant are of the field is 180 ft. squared. what is the area of the original field?

x = width of field

2x = length of field (twice as long as it is wide)

x-5 (five feet taken from width)

2x - 4 (four feet taken from length)

area = length * width

180 = (2x-4)(x-5)

2x^2 - 14x + 20 = 180

2x^2 - 14x -160 = 0

x^2 - 7x - 80 = 0

use quadratic formula to determine original width (x) and length(2x), then multiply those to get area of original field.
