6 - 5 = 3
x x + 1 x
First you have to find the common denominator, which in case will be x(x + 1).
To get everything to have the same denominator, multiply the first and last term by (x + 1)/(x + 1) and the second term by x/x:
6 • (x + 1) - 5 • (x) = 3 • (x + 1)
x (x + 1) x + 1 (x) x (x + 1)
Since every term has the same denominator, we can just work with the numerator, and solve for x.
6x + 6 - 5x = 3x + 3
x + 6 = 3x + 3
-2x = -3
x = 3/2
