I______-2___-10_ -8_______ 1. the first coefficient (1) just comes straight down

1 5 4 -5 2. Multiply the -2 * the 1 at the bottom and put below

the second coefficient (7)

3.ADD 7 + -2 to get 5, which goes to the bottom line

4.Multiply the -2 * the 5 to get -10, place below the 14

5.ADD 14 + -10 to get 4 which goes to the bottom

6.Multiply the -2* the 4 to get -8, place below the 3.

7.ADD 3 + -8 to get -5 which goes to the bottom.

The numbers on the bottom line (1,5,4,-5) are the coefficients in the terms of the answer. Remember that the all exponents drop by a degree from where we started. The answer is (1)x^2 + 5x + 4 - 5/(x+2).

The 5 is a remainder so that's why it looks different than the other terms.
