The formation of mountains are a result of a convergent plate boundary where two or more CONTINENTAL plates come together. Because there is no where for the land to go, it gets smushed and folded up into a mountain.
If an oceanic plate and a continental plate collided, the result would be different. You would get a subduction zone. The oceanic plate would sink under the continental because it is heavier or more dense than the continent.
