A car leaves town

Question

A car leaves town travelling 50 km/h. How long will it take the second car travelling at 60km/h to catch up to the first car if it leaves 1 hour later?

Answer 1

50+50x=60x

x=5

 

In 5 hours, Car A will have traveled 50+50(5)=300 miles and Car B will travel 50(6)=300 miles as well.  

 

For these problems you can also try looking at the difference in the rates (60-50=10) and figure out how much of a head start the one car got.
