Hi Pratima-

I have in the restaurant/catering business for over 20 years so I was curious to see if this question was answered properly. I'm afraid I came up with a different answer from Andrea.

In my math:

4oz x 4= 16oz (1 lb.)

1000 guests divided by 16 = 62.4 lbs

So my Answer would be to buy 1/50lb case and smaller packages to get you to 12.4 additional pounds.

Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation.

Hi Pratima,

First we must convert our servings into the same unit of measurement.

There are 16 ounces in a pound.

Therefore, a 4 ounce serving = 4 oz / 16 oz = 1/4 pound.

Now, figure out how much we need for 1000 people to eat 1/4 pound of hash browns each.

1000 x 1/4 pound = 250 pounds of hash browns.

If hash browns only come in 50 pound cases, we divide the amount we need by the amount per case.

250 / 50 = 5 cases of hash browns.
