Let the unknown numbers be X and Y.
X = 2Y + 3
X+Y = 12
X = 12 - Y
Therefore
2Y + 3 = 12 - Y
3Y = 12 - 3 = 9
3Y = 9
Y = 3
X =12 - Y = 12 - 3 = 9
