Your friend has a check for $1000 after a 55 hour work week. However, every hour past 40 is considered overtime and is paid 1.5 times the usual wage. How much is your friends usual wage?

Let x = hourly wage

 

Then, wages for the first 40 hours = 40x

           wages for 15 overtime hours = 15(1.5x) = 22.5x

 

So, 40x + 22.5x = 1000

 

                  62.5x = 1000

 

                         x= $16/hour
