A quadratic equation is in the form
y = ax2 + bx + c
1) Identify what the numbers a, b, and c are
2) substitute them into the quadratic formula
x = (-b ± √(b2 - 4ac)) / 2a
3) Use PEMDAS to simplify.

"TO SOLVE" means to find the values of x that make the equation true. Point (2) SOLVES of x when you put the values of a, b, and c into the quadratic equation. For example: x = (-3 ± √26)/201/10/20
