Hope this find you in time. Just convert the sentence into an equation like so:
Let N represent "a number"
The Sum of: "add these things together"
Twice a Number: 2 * N
Half the Number: (1/2) * N
Is 10: " = 10 "
Now use the word problem in total.
So adding the two together,
(2N) + ( (1/2)N ) = 10
Simplifying:
2.5 * N = 10
Dividing both sides by 2.5 to isolate N,
N = 4.
So 4 is the number, but let's double check to be safe.
Double 4 is 8. Half 4 is 2. 8 + 2 does indeed equal 10.
Look for key words in word problems to make them into equations. "Sum" often indicates addition. "Is" usually means an equal sign. "Less" can be subtraction. Etc. Practice makes perfect but hope this was helpful!
