Hi there! Great question. Let me try to help you out...
First off, we know the total world population will be 7.7 billion, so when we add up all the populations this will be our total. Now, let's say that Asia's population will be "x". The following will be the population of the other continents listed:
Asia = x
Africa = x - .002
Rest of World = (.5)x + .2
Now we add them up and set them equal to 7.7 billion to solve for x:
x + (x - .002) + [(.5)x + .2] = 7.7
2.5x +0.198 = 7.7
2.5x = 7.502
x = 3.008
So now we can plug 3.008 in for x to find the populations:
Asia = 3.008
Africa = 3.008 - .002 = 3.006
Rest of the World = (.5)(3.008) + 2 = 3.504
