For any word problem – first try to translate to a math equation:
“Of” translates to times (or multiplication)
“What” translates to x (your unknown variable)
“is” translates to “=”
Therefore: "½% of what number is 5", translates to: (Note: ½% = .005)
.005x = 5
x = 1000 (after dividing each side by .005)
Test: .005 (1000) = 5 (Correct)
