Write the equation of a line that is perpendicular to y=-1 and that passes through the point (8,-4)

The important point of this problem is to recognize that y = -1 is a horizontal line. Thus, a line perpendicular to this line must be a vertical line.

The vertical line that passes through (8, -4) must have all x values that equal 8:

Thus, the line is: x = 8

These really got me at first, but it's waaaaaaay easier than you think!

y = -1 is a horizontal line where all points have a y-value of -1, like (-234,-1) or (0.654,-1).

A line perpendicular to a horizontal line is vertical with an equation of x = whatever the x-value is of all points along the line.
