How do you know to use this equation versus the other kinematic equations? This is from someone who breezed through biology and chemistry but always struggled with physics.

I can’t respond effectively with this editor. The equation of motion I used assumes no horizontal force, acceleration due only to gravity & initial velocity either upward (e.g. a projectile) or downward as in this problem. I hope that helps.

Student, when you solve the quadratic equation in Paul's answer, you will get a positive solution and a negative solution. Since time starts at t = 0, the correct solution will be the positive one.10/28/19
