The total distance traveled is the sum of the distance traveled by bus and by walking:
Dtotal = Dby bus + Dwalking
The distance traveled by bus is the velocity of the bus times time - but BE CAREFUL. They gave you velocity in miles per HOUR but the time given was in MINUTES. Convert time to hours by dividing by 60 (if this doesn't make sense schedule time with a tutor to learn dimensional analysis....
th = tm ÷ 60
So time traveled by bus in hours is 24 minutes times (1 hour / 60 min)
tbus = 24 min • (1hr/60 min) = 24/60 = 2/5 hr
Sbus = 40 mph
Therefore Dby bus= Sbus • tbus = 40 m/hr • 2/5 hr = 16 mi
Similarly
twalking = 12 min • (1hr/60 min) = 12/60 = 1/5 hr
Swalking = 6 mph
Therefore Dwalking= Swalking • twalking = 6 m/hr • 1/5 hr = 6/5 mi
*** summary:
Therefore the total distance is:
Dtotal = Dby bus + Dwalking = Sbus • tbus + Swalking • twalking = 40 m/hr • 2/5 hr + 6 m/hr • 1/5 hr
= 16 mi + 6/5 mi = 17 1/5 mi
