An equation is a function if every x-value inputted results in only one y-value. Since we are taking the 5th root of x, an odd root, we have a function.
While the square root of 25 is ± 5, thus not a function, the fifth root of, say 32 is 2, because (-2)5 = -32.
So, again, we have a function.
