tim wants to cover a 6 mile course in 1 hour by running part and walking the rest. he wants a 5 minute water break. he runs at 8 mph and walks at 3mph. what is the minimum distance he will need to run to complete the course in 1 hour

x represents the time that he runs

8x + 3(11/12 - x) = 6

8x + 11/4 - 3x = 6

5x + 11/4 = 6

20x + 11 = 24

20x = 13

x = 13/20

Time should run 13/20 of an hour or for 39 minutes
