PEMDAS, Parentheses, Exponentiation, Multiplication or Division, Addition or Subtraction, in that order, will be used. X will be the unknown number in all cases. Parentheses will be used if context warrants.
- four times the sum of a number and five ==> 4*(X+5)
- ten less than three times some number ==> 3*X - 10
- one-half of a number decreased by eleven ==> X/2 - 11
- three more than the quotient of a number and two ==> (3*X) / 2
