To calculate the average, or mean, of a set of numbers, simply take the sum of those numbers and divide by the total number of items. In this case, 75 + 82 + 83 represents the sum, which comes to 240. Taking this sum and dividing by the three items we used to calculate it, we get 240/3 = 80. Thus, the average score will be 80.
A simple way to test this answer, in case you want to know you are correct, is to see whether the total amount by which each item is over or under the average cancels out in the end. For example, in this case, we get the following:
75 (-5, or 5 below 80)
82 (+2, or 2 above 80)
83 (+3, or 3 above 80)
Since we can see that we are -5, +2, and +3 away from 80, and that those numbers together would sum to 0, we know that we have calculated the correct average. (This method is also a shortcut I know I use, as well as a few other tutors with whom I have worked, to calculate averages.)
