I think if you've been involved in sales, then making the switch to product marketing, should come naturally, especially if it's related to what you have been selling. You've been in the field, you been hearing what your clients want and need, so you can easily take the information and pass it on to product development. It makes total sense. The Marketing VP should send all their top staff through sales, then over to marketing development.
