The mid ocean ridge system is mostly deep under the ocean, and the ridge is often far from land masses with some exceptions. They occur along divergent boundaries, where two tectonic plates composed of thin oceanic crust meet. As they move apart (diverge), new mafic ocean floor is created as molten magma rises up from the string of underwater volcanoes that make up the mid ocean ridges.
