Yeah, these used to confuse me, too. g(7) tells us to replace x with 7.
72 - 4(7) - 5/72 - 6(7) - 16
49 - 28 - 5/49 - 42 - 16
16/-9
-16/9
Why switch the negative from the denominator to the numerator? If either the numerator or denominator is negative, the entire fraction is negative. If both have the same sign, the entire fraction is positive, -16/-9 = 16/9 for example.
