Charmaine, Reuben, and Alan sent a total of 111

 text messages over their cell phones during the weekend. Alan sent 4

 times as many messages as Charmaine. Charmaine sent 9

 fewer messages than Reuben. How many messages did they each send?

So our 3 equations are:

C + R + A = 111

A = 4 * C

R = C + 9

Plugging in the values from the other two equations into the first equation, we get

C + (C + 9) + (4 * C) = 111

6C + 9 = 111

6C = 102

C = 17

and

A = 4 * 17 = 68

R = 17 + 9 = 26
