Cost per gallon = cost/gallon = $57.78/20 = $2.889/gallon

While $2.889 may seem like an incorrect price for a gallon of gas (why not round to $2.89?), gas prices really are to the tenth of a cent (or thousandths of a dollar). When you see $3.25 on the sign, you are really paying $3.259 (nope, not $3.249 rounded up) for a gallon of gas. Some stations will advertise it this way.
