The length of a new rectangle playing field is 2 yards longer then triple the width. If the perimeter of the rectangle playing field is 484 yards, what are the dimensions? What is the Width?

let the width of the field be w yards

then the length is 3w + 2 yards

the perimeter is 2 times the length plus 2 times the width

so the perimeter is 2(3w + 2) + 2(w) = 6w + 4 + 2w = 8w + 4

we know the perimeter is 484 yards, so set equal to the expression above and solve for w

8w + 4 = 484

8w = 480

w = 60

so the dimensions of the field are length = 182 yards and width = 60 yards
