Did the poor Egyptians scrape of the white sandstone layer on the pyramids to build houses?

Houses were primary built from mud brick, making the material easy to access and create for all members of Egyptian society. Therefore, the lower class would not have used sandstone to build their homes. However, it is common to find that materials/stone used in one building project were recycled from a older project.
