If the bacteria triples every day, then each day has 3 times the amount of bacteria as the day before.
So after the first day, there will be 3*1000 = 3000
After the second, there will be 3*(3*1000) = 9000
After the third, 3*(3*(3*1000)) = 27,000
And then after the fourth, 3*(3*(3*(3*1000))) = 81,000
As a general formula, each day we multiply by 3, and repeated multiplication is exponentiation, so after t days, there will be 3t*1000 bacteria.
