North is perpendicular to east and Ryuji had been walking for 2 hours or 2h * 4km/h or 8 km before Makota started biking. Knowing that Ryuji was 8 km East would be 8 units east as the base of your Right Triangle. Also it is implied that after the 2 hrs when Ryuji was at the 8 km mark that the diagonal (longest side and their distance apart ) of the Right Triangle is 40 km. So it sounds like you have 2 sides of a Right Triangle the longest side 40km and the horizontal base 8 km east for Ryuji 2 hrs into his walk. You should be able to use the Pythagorean Theorem above to solve for the number of kilometers Makoto was at when Ryuji was at 8 km as a^2 + 8^2 = 40^2 a^2 = 40^2 - 8^2 = 1600 - 64 =1536 a = sqrt(1536) = 39.19 km= Makoto's distance distance/speed should give a time Makoto Since I don't have a picture I think you can use this calculate Makoto's time. Kee in mind the bike speed 2.5 times the walking speed and the walker had a 2 hour head start. I hope this helps if you use a grid remember x goes east and west and y goes north and south
