Question

A survey showed that 74% of a nursery’s mail order customers spent more than $100 on plants each spring. Predict how many of 125,000 mail order customers will spend less than $100 on plants next spring.

First: There is no percentage given for those who spend exactly $100. But you can still *predict* how many will spend less than $100 because predictions are, by their nature, inexact. :-) So... let's not worry about that, though you might note it to your teacher so s/he can modify the problem for next year!

So, if 74% spend more than $100, you can estimate that 100-74=26% will spend less than $100 on plants. Convert the percentage to a decimal, 0.26, then multiply 125,000 by 0.26 to get your answer.
