I would start this problem off by setting Joyce to equal the variable J, and Marianne to equal the variable M.
Joyce and Marianne both earn a combined income of 1600 a week can rewritten as: J + M = 1600.
Now, the second sentence states that Marianne makes 200 more than Joyce does. 200 more than say, x, is x+200. Therefore, you can rewrite that and say, M = 200 + J.
Now, we know M = 200 + J, so replace M with 200 + J, so you will end up with J + (200 + J) = 1600.
This is equivalent to 2J + 200 = 1600. Then, solve for J.
2J = 1400, J = 700
Once you have J, you can plug that into the original equation of J + M = 1600, so 700 + M =1600, so M = 1600 - 700 = 900.
Marianne = $900, Joyce = $700
