Does the Vice President of the country also run the day to day activities of the Senate

Nope! In a practical sense, the V.P. shows up symbolically and does preside over the Senate only in times of a potential or known tie, to break the tie with his/her own vote, and then during symbolic times, such as to swear folks in, etc.
