Hi,
Google a picture the term " 1" diameter A325 bolt". You will see that the shank of the bolt is the widest portion, while the threaded portion has a smaller diameter. If you use the nominal shank area of the bolt, you will be overestimating the size, and therefore the strength of the bolt.
Make any sense?
