mg is considered a weight unit. The reason people are conscious about the amount of mg they consume daily with their medications is related to your body's capacity of metabolizing the medication. It is important to remember that your kidneys and liver both have the capability of metabolizing medications (depending on the pharmaceutics). Consuming excessive amounts of a specific medication can lead to complications that vary from toxicity to organ failure to even death. Another reason the mg is taken into consideration is the effect of the drug. Using a blood pressure medication as an example, if the physician orders 25 mg of a blood pressure medication three times a day, it means the patient will ideally have more control throughout the day of their blood pressure. This would be a total of 75 mg/ day. However, if the physician ordered a one time dose of 75 mg, it could potentially harm the patient through severe hypotension or other complications. Additionally, once the medication is metabolized, the patient could experience hypertension later in the day versus having less mg spread out over the day for better symptom control.
