It might not be exactly what you were looking for but the MIDI protocol was just updated this year (https://midi.org) for the first time since 1983, and has some powerful new capabilities. MIDI works with XML and has a native file type called XMF; the original MIDI protocol was pretty thoughtfully designed, and MIDI files were instrumental in creating the sound of the internet before compressed and streaming audio were available.
A lot of the protocol's practical usage involved interoperability of connected electronic instruments, but the new specifications enable some exciting new capabilities. I'm sure their community would love to have your input.
