The key for any part of the GMAT, but the verbal section in particular, is to zero in on where you are weakest. A lot of people will take some practices, find the part which they enjoy doing (because they're good at it) then end up becoming amazing at one or two parts.
Once you've found the weak spot (personally mine was sentence correction and I think a lot of people can relate to that!) it's about finding the "tricks" which the GMAT relies on. Each of the types of questions can really be broken down to individual issues so a good tutor to point out which is which is the way to go then!
