Prenatal vitamins are only recommended to be used for women who are trying to conceive, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Building up those vital necessities for the formation of a baby in the woman's body can help prevent defects in that formation, so most doctors recommend beginning taking prenatal vitamins before attempting to get pregnant. Continuing these vitamins while breastfeeding can give the baby an extra boost while it's fragile immune system is growing. Some claim that taking them regularly outside of these three categories can stregthen/improve one's hair and nails, but this has not been scientifically verified. In fact, the prenatal vitamin contains greater amounts of certain vitamins such as iron than are recommended for daily consumption outside of trying to conceive, being pregnant, and breastfeeding.
