We can apply a quadratic here

18 square feet limits the area and amount of working material, and we have a rectangular table with

Width = w

Length = w + 3

Length x Width = Area

(w +3)w = 18

w² + 3w = 18

w² + 3w - 18 = 0

factoring

(w + 6) (w - 3)

w cannot be -6

w = 3 ft

L = w + 3 = 3 +3 = 6 ft

So we have a Width of 3 ft and a Length of 6 ft

3 ft x 6 ft = 18 ft²
